Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)
The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) was established in 1945 due to the need for international economic cooperation after World War II. This Council aims to advance economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development at a global scale. By facilitating debate and innovative thinking, establishing consensus for advancement, and coordinating efforts to achieve internationally agreed goals, ECOSOC serves as a principal platform for discussion. As of 2026, ECOSOC comprises 54 member states, including 14 in Africa, 11 in the Asia-Pacific, 6 in Eastern Europe, 10 in Latin America and the Caribbean, and 13 from other regions.
